My favourite white shirt

There was time when literally all I wore was white shirts with jeans. It was painless, saved time and I still managed to look somewhat pulled together. (This has started to be quite a pattern in my life. I had a quiche phase, a layered necklaces phase etc...)When I worked at Style in Singapore and Elle in New York, I wore this ensemble whenever I was just too lazy to think of a creative, fashion-y outfit to wear and when I worked at UBS last summer, it was ALL I wore, very single day. Even now, I still fall back on this outfit on particularly nasty weeks in school. Not surprisingly, I have amassed quite a substantial collection of white shirts.

For a white shirt to make it into heavy rotation in my closet, it has to fulfil several requirements. I like shirts that fall below my hip, have a relaxed fit and that is not made of starchy cotton. Linen is great for the summer but cotton shirts that are more malleable works for every day.

This shirt has grown to be my favourite out of the plethora of white shirts in my closet. My mom got it for me from a market in Florence about five years ago. The tag says that it's made by "Decolster" but even after extensive google searches, I've not found anything else by this label. I love how it has subtle nuances of a pirate's shirt with its ruffles and pleats down the front of the shirt and its slightly straggly collar. I've worn it so many times that the shirt's transluscent now and the material has become so worn-in I may need to start wearing a tank top underneath. I discovered a bright pink marker stain on the back of the shirt today, but I don't think that's going to stop me from wearing it even if it means looking like an extra from the Pirates of the Carribean movie.-Hairin

Today we met Ivan in town for lunch and browsing the stores. We had initially planned to go to the Club21 bazaar at the F1 building but after being in the hot, hot heat and hearing about Ivan's and my sister's nightmarish experience last year, we pretty much decided to just hang around in town.

It turned out to be a pretty good decision. Fui had been looking for a Dior homme backpack and although she did not manage to locate it, we found a slew of sheer Dior homme tees in navy and white at Club21men retaling for about SGD$229. After buying a grey tee from The Row by the Olsen twins for about SGD$800, anything below that seems like steal now.

A designer I'll be keeping my eye on is the Bulgarian designer Peter Petrov. I tried on two of his shirts at Blackjack designed a la Alex Wang S/S 09 with the draped open back. His stuff falls into the basics with a twist category, perhaps a bit more conceptual than the likes of Helmut Lang. Definitely one to watch!-Hairin

Glam Slam- Georgina Chapman

In a time when it's considered de rigor to be undone, Georgina Chapman is like a breath of fresh air. The antithesis of Alexander Wang's and Erin Wasson's too-cool-for-school aesthetic which seems to have infected the entire of Manhattan's fashion set, she brings effortless glamour to the New York social scene.

No one is a better ambassador to Marchesa label than she is. Almost exclusively photographed in Marchesa, she wears the feathers and embellishment that has been synonymous with the brand with ease. To high-octane events she wears couture-like ensembles like those that she outfits her star clientele in. One of my favourite looks was the dress she wore to the MET gala a year ago that seemed to have been dipped in liquid gold.

More oftenly though she pairs short cocktail dresses, embellished in a gamut of ways, with her beloved sky-high Louboutins. While this lady obviously takes immense pleasure in the art of appearance, her outfits are by no means constrained to the fantastical dresses she creates with Keren Craig. For more casual events she demonstrates her ability to blend in with the downtown crowd by wearing in silk pants dripped in beading paired with a basic black tank. What sets her apart from them however is her poise as she puts on even the simplest of clothing with the same grace as when she wears the many dreamy creations from her own label.-Hairin

Celebration:

For lunch, we had the Vongole whipped up by beth.

An hour after lunch, I hear shouts of jubilation in the kitchen to find this magnificent mass of a red velvet cake.

They couldn't bear to cut it.

Although it was more like a pink velvet cake, it was still some pretty amazing dessert they had baked. The cream cheese and the berries together was just mhmm-mmm.

Fui and I were searching for a location to taken pictures after we spent a few hours in Ngee Ann City today discussing details about our shop. While we were walking to the bus stop she convinced me that Orchard Park Suites would serve as the perfect backdrop for pictures, with its ideal location and carefully-planned landscaping.

We ventured in and collapsed exhausted on the lounge chairs by the pool. When lying down on the chairs and looking up at the sky, you realize why this is prime property. Surrounding you is not only lush greenery and the conveniences of the city-centre but also a sort of tranquility that only comes with such a hallowed address. The mechanical and industrial chaos of the nearby construction of Orchard Ion which seems to have taken over the entire of Orchard Road escapes you, and that is reason enough for this property to be worth something.

Visiting One Fullerton after such a while, it's amazing to see the changes taking place in Singapore. In a few years, this whole scene is going to morph again. The Singapore we know would disappear and be replaced by a newer, more dynamic one. Necessary for our economy to grow, but not necessarily better for everyone.

Today was suffocatingly hot. The heat was thick and unyielding, settling on the skin like a layer of steaming fog. In theory, a cut-out maxi dress, silk playsuit and slouchy paper-thin, acid-washed jeans seemed like good ideas to battle the heatwave.

In reality, this type of weather just can't be beat.
